Judging books by their covers… May 2024

Book and magazine cover designs are an essential aspect of the publishing industry. They are usually the first thing that catches a reader's eye, and often, can make or break a book's success. A great cover design not only reflects the content of the book or magazine but also appeals to the target audience.

This month’s collection of book and magazine covers is wonderfully diverse, showcasing a broad range of design aesthetics that have caught my eye. As I laid them all out before me, I didn’t notice any recurring themes at first. However, on closer inspection, I see a few black-and-white images with coloured overlays hinting at a subtle pattern. It’s fascinating to observe these elements emerge, especially since I choose these covers based purely on individual appeal throughout the month, without any conscious intent to adhere to a specific theme. The variety in styles, colours, and imagery makes each cover unique, yet some common threads appear as they come together in this eclectic compilation.

This month’s list includes

Challenger, Adam Higginbotham. Cover design by Pete Garceau

The Skunks, Fiona Warnick. Cover design by Beth Steidle

The Premonitions Bureau, Sam Knight. Cover design by Jack Smyth

Prairie Edge, Conor Kerr. Cover design by Kate Sinclair

Olay, Emin Özmen

Necropolis, Kathryn Olivarius. Cover design by Marina Drukman

King Richard, Michael Dobbs. Cover design by Tyler Comrie

Hardtack, Rahim Fortune

The Eyes #14, Fracture

Doxology, Nell Zink. Cover design by Jack Smyth

How They Broke Britain, James O’Brien

The New Criterion, May 2023

Divided Island, Daniela Tarazona. Cover design by Jack Smyth

Good Actors, Sommer Browning.
