Judging books by their covers… March 2024

Book and magazine cover designs are an essential aspect of the publishing industry. They are usually the first thing that catches a reader's eye, and often, can make or break a book's success. A great cover design not only reflects the content of the book or magazine but also appeals to the target audience.

This month, I seem drawn to mainly plain backgrounds and typographic covers. This is not a bad thing, and it will be interesting to look back over time and reflect on whether my taste changed or whether there is consistency in what I select.

All the titles are very clean, with the exception of American Surfaces, which illustrates my contrasting aesthetics, which fight each other daily: clean, minimal intent versus messy, explorative adventures. Think Dieter Rams and David Cason, both working away in my head on the same project at the same time.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this mix of great covers. Have you seen any covers recently that have inspired you?

This month’s list includes

Ad Rock, Ari Marcopoulos
American Surfaces, Stephen Shore
ARN Vol.4, Eric Tabuchi & Nelly Monnie
Half the Kingdom, Lore Segal. Cover design Christopher Brian King
I love it. What is it?, Turner Duckworth agency
Real Review, issue 15
Road Rat, issue 16
Seeing, Jonathan Olivares
Skateboard, Jonathan Olivares
