Judging books by their covers… July 2023

Book and magazine cover designs are an essential aspect of the publishing industry. They are the first thing that catches the reader's eye and can make or break a book's success. A great cover design not only reflects the content of the book or magazine but also appeals to the target audience.

This month’s roundup of interesting cover designs that have caught my eye appears to have a leaning toward red and orange. There’s also a slight duotone theme running through many of them too. Strong colour and a black and white image, be that a photograph or illustration is such an effective visual treatment for a cover.

The oddball in this month’s mix is Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros. The cover was designed by No One Designs and doesn’t fit with my usual aesthetic. However, I think it stood out to me due to the illustration interweaving through the type.

Have you seen any covers recently that have inspired you?
