Tortilla Flat is an easy-going read, which perfectly matches the story’s flow. Steinbeck tells the tale of a group of paisano friends, but centres around Danny, a generous and loving man. While there’s nothing wrong with the book, I guess I’ve been spoiled by reading some of the author’s other tales. As with The Winter of Our Discontent, I felt this story lacked the sense of enjoyment I’ve come to associate with Steinbeck’s writing.
