James

Percival Everett

Please read this book. Percival Everett has delivered possibly the best book I’ve read. It continues the tale of Huckleberry Finn but from a very different and important perspective: that of the enslaved Jim. Everett stays true to the tone and style of Twain’s original story while simultaneously creating something completely different with runaway slave Jim as the narrator.

While the story exposes some of the brutality of slavery, it is a love story and a journey of strength. I found I couldn’t put the book down, enjoyed every word and didn’t want the story to end. There is probably a nostalgic view from me, as I loved Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, but Percival Everett has elevated the stories by bringing a much-needed perspective.

It’s exciting and suspenseful and heart-wrenching all at the same time, and the ending… More please.
