After reading James by Percival Everett, I decided to try another of his titles. I’ll admit, after enjoying James so much, I was concerned that The Trees might not live up to my expectations. I needn’t have worried. The Trees is another superbly written story.
Following a bizarre murder, the investigation unfolds into a complex narrative full of twists and turns. Everett blends history, satire, dark humour and memorable characters to deliver a gripping read.
The short chapters cleverly jump between different scenes without spoiling the flow. It’s a book you can dip in and out of, though chances are you won’t want to put it down. With its vivid dialogue and cinematic feel, it’s crying out for a screen adaptation.
