Steinbeck returns us to the scene of Cannery Row, the weedy lots, junk heaps and flophouses of Monterey. Once again, the author brings to life the inhabitants of a netherworld through laughter, tears and, in a way, romanticises living on the fringes of society. It’s a great sequel and definitely worth a read if you enjoyed Cannery Row.
