I like the writing of John Stienbeck, so it will come as no surprise that I enjoyed this book. Set during the 1930s US Depression, most of the characters are layabouts, deadbeats and mostly work-less. The way Stienbeck writes, you find a connection with all of them. Through the hardships, the tomfoolery and the violence you cannot ignore that these characters are all trying their best. It’s a beautiful portrayal of a period in time I find fascinating.
