Weekly thoughts, 23rd July 2023

Things that I've been thinking about this week. Two in a row is a good start to making this a weekly habit.

1. Pink

It’s everywhere due to companies leveraging the launch of the Barbie movie to raise their own profile. Over on Dezeen, Cajsa Carlson gives us Eight interiors where Barbiecore pink adds a playful touch of colour.

2. Eyesight

Glaucoma runs in my family, as do cataracts. I value my eyesight and do not take it for granted, as I know that someday I will start to lose mine. This week’s newsletter Bookmark Beat from Daini Sandoval, reminds us all to appreciate your sight if you’re lucky enough to have it.

3. Never waste your midlife crisis

Austin Kleon expands on this wise advice from John Higgs, author of William Blake vs. The World.

4. Crash Helmets

One of the joys of freelancing is the freedom to jump on my bike and set out on mini adventures almost at will. This week, while cycling off-road, I took a tumble and went down pretty hard. Thankfully, I had no serious injuries other than pride and skin loss. I whacked my head and was grateful for my crash helmet doing its job. I’ve ordered a new Kask Mojito to replace my current one. Hopefully, I won’t be testing this against the ground anytime soon.

5. Commuters creating clean energy

Students from the French engineering school Junia have developed a way of creating energy from public transport turnstiles. Trialled at the Paris’ Miromesnil Metro station, this project shows how a little change can add up to a big impact.
