I’ve got my backside into gear and started working on my Beetle again. Originally bought as a run-around while I found an early Bug to play with, I’ve now realised that I might as well have some fun with this one. Initially my thoughts were to build a traditional Cal-Look Bug, but on finding various bodywork issues I changed direction.
Taking the front wing off can be a pig of a job if your Bug’s still wearing it’s original wings. Mine isn’t and all the bolts came out nicely, until I got to the last one. As I turned the ratchet the bolt was turning, but not coming out. Looking inside the spare wheel well revealed that the captive nut had come free. Trust it to be the most difficult one to get to. Some patients, mole grips and about 10 minutes wrestling and it was free.
After cleaning up the horrible metallic fungus I found, the metal wasn’t actually that bad. OK, so the holes are still there, but at least it appears that they are repairable
A closer look at the offside A-pillar reveals some extra holes that I don’t believe VW put there.
So I’ve set up yet another Blog. This time to keep me motivated with my “Project 66″ – the latest air-cooled VW to grace my garage:

Now I love air-cooled VWs and the prices of Split Screen Buses has spiralled upwards at an alarming rate. No longer can you pick up a Bus for a few hundred pounds and get it on the road for a few hundred more. However, those cool dudes over at Fat Face have launched a new competition, with a first prize of a classic Split Screen camper van.
Øyvind Skinnes Turbobeetle ran a 9.03 1/4 mile at this weekend’s SCC drag meeting at Gardermoen raceway, Norway. This I think makes it the Worlds fastest street legal, floorpan Beetle! Quite an achievement, will we see an 8 second floor pan Bug soon? See the video on YouTube:
